Gyūdon is a very popular Japanese fast food made of a bowl of rice topped with beef and onion in sweet soy sauce flavoured with sake, mirin and dashi.
Ingredients
200 g Thinly Sliced Beef
1 Onion
2 Bowls Steamed Japanese Rice
Sauce Mix
1 Tbsp Sake
1 Tbsp Mirin
1 Tbsp White Sugar
3 Tbsp Light Soy Sauce
Water (150 mL)
½ Tsp Granulated Dashi
Method
1. Slice the onion.

2. Prepare the sauce mix with sake (1 tbsp), mirin (1 tbsp), white sugar (1 tbsp), light soy sauce (3 tbsp), water (150 mL), and granulated dashi (½ tsp).

3. Blanch the beef slices in hot, boiling water for 1 min.

4. Place the onion and the sauce mixture in a pan. Cover with a lid and simmer over medium heat for 5 min.

5. Add the beef slices and cook for an additional 5 min. Place it on steamed Japanese rice to serve.

Notes
Chicken powder could be used to substitute granulated dashi.
Half cooked or raw egg is the perfect condiment to serve with Gyūdon.
